The Internet2 Network

2007: As a single 10 gigabit backbone became full, Internet2 arranged for a national dark fiber network with Level3. This network, which is called the Internet2 Network , was completed in 2007. Initially, it consisted of ten 10 gigabit wavelengths built on a DWDM platform built using Infinera equipment.

In a new twist to the historical cooperation started with Midnet, ISU arranged with the Great Plains Network (GPN) and other regional players to share a 10 gigabit connection in Kansas City to the new Internet2 Network. A GPN router in Kansas City connects to Internet2, and ISU connects to the GPN router over a 10 gigabit circuit using BOREAS-Net.

At about the same time, the University of Iowa connected to the CIC OmniPoP via a 10 gigabit circuit also using BOREAS-Net.

Continuing our collaborative efforts, ISU and Iowa agreed to use another 10 gigabit BOREAS-Net circuit as a backup path. So even if one line goes down, both institutions will maintain connectivity to Internet2.
